Lake Bohinj is the largest natural lake in Slovenia with endless opportunities for outdoor activities. It is a fantastic destination for various activities like water sports, hiking in the Julian Alps, cycling and e-cycling, running, climbing, paragliding…or just relaxing in this charming nature.
If you check the map you will surprisingly find out there is no actual town called Bohinj; the name refers to the region. At the lake you will find a small town Ribčev Laz and Ukanc, a smaller hamlet on the lake’s southwest shore. To the northeast you will find a string of idyllic villages: Stara Fužina, Studor and Srednja Vas. The largest town, Bohinjska Bistrica, lies 6km east of the lake.
Weather in summertime can be tricky. You can expect high temperatures up to 30°C or a quick drop down to 15°C. When packing do not forget about warm clothes.
Clear and clean water
Lake water is restored three times per year. In summer, the temperature of the water rises to 22°C. It is warm enough for swimming and the water is crystal clear. The beach has mostly the small white stones and sand, what makes beautiful color of water. Bring your best cameras with you to catch beautiful scenery. Lake is calm enough for kayak or SUP so kids will have hours of fun spending on the beach. You will find the most beautiful beach on the lake’s southwest shore, where Sava Bohinjka enters Bohinj lake.

You will find a few spots where you can rent kayaks, canoes, SUP. Our pick is PAC Sports. You can check their summer programm here, and book your outdoor activity.

Family hiking trails from zero to hero
When you are traveling with kids plan your routs accordingly. Some kids are used to walk a lot and others needs more motivation or kids’ company to forget about walking (“my leg hurts”, “I’m so tired”, “I’m so sleepy”). Just a hint: forests and walking paths are great spots for dwarfs who incites candies if you collect some cones, wooden sticks, or moss.
