Pokopališče školjk, školjčišče Ankaran

Pokopališče školjk ali školjčna sipina se nahaja v zalivu Polje med Koprom in Ankaranom. Je edina školjčna sipina v Sloveniji. Najdete jo, če iz glavne ceste proti Ankaranu, zavijete pri smerokazu Sveta Katarina. Otroci se bodo skoraj sigurno zabavali med brskanjem in iskanjem različnih školjk.

Školjčna sipina je nastala po letu 1990, ko je Luka Koper s poglabljanjem dna ob drugem luškem pomolu prečrpavala mulj iz morskega dna na bližnjo lokacijo poleg izliva Rižane v Jadransko morje. Iz kupov mulja je dež postopoma spral blato, ostale so le apnenčaste lupine mehkužcev.

The shell cemetery or mussel dunes is located in the Polje bay between Koper and Ankaran. It is the only shellfish dunes in Slovenia. You can find it by turning from the main road to Ankaran by the signpost of St. Katherine. Kids will almost certainly have fun browsing and finding different shells.

The mussel dune was created after 1990, when the port of Koper was pumping silt from the seafloor to a nearby location near the Rižana estuary into the Adriatic Sea by deepening the bottom along the second harbor pier. From the piles of silt, the rain gradually washed away the mud, leaving only the limestone shells of the molluscs.
