Overview
If you need to take a break from temples visit, this is a good place to go. This is a great place for young children. The zoo is quite small, so you can finish the tour before they get too tired or bored. We can see the animals up close and there is a great variety of animals. There is a small playground where children can ride on trains, play bumper cars and ride a small Ferris wheel.
Kyoto City Zoo (京都市動物園) is a zoo located in Sakyō ward, Kyoto and was established in 1903, making it the second oldest zoo in the country after Ueno Zoo in Tokyo.
Animals at the zoo include lions, tigers, jaguars, bears, hippos, giraffes, zebras, deer, llamas, gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, monkeys, Red pandas, tanuki, foxes, ostriches, cranes, swans, ducks, flamingos, eagles, hawks, peacocks, Humboldt penguins, and sea lions.
A children’s zoo opened in 1955, and lets visitors watch the animals from up close and even touch them. Animals in this area include rabbits, Guinea pig, miniature pigs, goats, tortoises, a donkey, cockatoos, chickens, ducks, a Ural owl, and rockhopper penguins.
A number of strollers and wheelchair are available to visitors for free. Please ask at the gate directly. As reservations cannot be made and numbers are limited, we recommend visitors who must have one to bring their own.
